Welcome and introductions.
Approval of minutes from 22 March 2004 meeting
The Chair distributed a copy of the current goals and objectives of general education and proposed outcomes for general education. Brad Ludrick moved to approve the proposed outcomes as a working document for revision of the goals and objectives of general education; Linda Kallam seconded the motion. The proposed outcomes were subdivided into two groups: (1) essential skills for success and (2) development of attitudes and values for responsible citizenship. The proposed outcomes for group 1 pertained to: (1) communication—both oral and written; (2) computer literacy; (3) mathematical or quantitative reasoning; (4) science reasoning; and (5) critical thinking. In the second group, outcomes covered topics such as : (1) social and political institutions; (2) wellness; (3) humanities; (4) fine arts; (5) science and society; (6) interrelatedness of disciplines; and (7) ethics and values. The Chair emphasized that this was a working document, or starting place, and should be modified by the Council after discussion with department chairs and faculty. The Chair indicated that these outcomes were developed after searching various websites of colleges and universities. These outcomes should fulfill the OSRHE requirements.
After considerable discuss and editorial changes, the motion of using the proposed outcomes as a working document passed unanimously.
Council members were requested to share the document (revised proposed outcomes will be e-mailed to members by end of week) with department chairs and faculty for review and comments.
The next meeting will be held at 2:00 pm on 3 May 2004 in BS 204.
