Fourth Native American Symposium: “Smoke Screens\/Smoke Signals: Looking Through Two Worlds”<\/h2>\n

Keynote Address<\/h4>\n

Joy Harjo<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s keynote address will be delivered by Joy Harjo. She is a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. She received a BA from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from the University of Iowa\u2019s Creative Writing Workshop. She has also completed the filmmaking program at the Anthropology Film Center in Santa Fe and a songwriting workshop at Berkelee School of Music in Boston. She has published six books of poetry. Another recent publication is a children\u2019s book,\u00a0The Good Luck Cat<\/em>, from Harcourt. She has also co-edited an anthology of native women\u2019s writing:\u00a0Reinventing the Enemy\u2019s Language: Contemporary Native Women\u2019s Writing of North America<\/em>\u00a0and a book of poetic prose with photographs by Steven Strom,\u00a0Secrets from the Center of the World<\/em>. Harjo was the narrator for the\u00a0Native Americans<\/em>\u00a0series on Turner Network and more recently the narrator for the Emmy award-winning show,\u00a0Navajo Codetalkers<\/em>\u00a0for National Geographic.<\/p>\n
