Poetry reading

Southeastern adjunct professor Ron Wallace held a poetry reading and book signing recently in the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library. Wallace read from his latest book, ‘Renegade and Other Poems.”

Poetry reading to celebrate work of Howard Starks set for April 7

DURANT, Okla. – A beloved former Southeastern Oklahoma State University teacher, Howard Starks, died in 2003, but is not forgotten. He and his award-winning poems will be celebrated in two poetry readings April 7 on the Durant campus.

Poems from the book will be presented during the two April 7 sessions, 12:30 p.m. in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union (second floor auditorium) and 7:30 p.m., in the Theatre Building on Montgomery Drive.

Both sessions are free and open to the public.

Original poems by Dr. Randy Prus, Ron Wallace and Chuck Ladd will also be presented by their authors during the two readings.

A videotape of Starks reading one of his own poems, provided by Dr. Wilma Shires of the Department of English, Humanities and Languages (EHL), will highlight the two sessions.

Starks taught at Southeastern from 1968-1995. His former students, colleagues in EHL and other friends still remember him fondly for his “ready wit, encyclopedic knowledge on many subjects and encouragement of the spirit of inquiry,” according to Dr. Elbert Hill, Southeastern professor emeritus of English.

The two poetry presentations were organized by former students Chuck Ladd and Ron Wallace, whom Starks befriended and mentored in poetry-writing. Several books of original poems by Wallace have been finalists for the prestigious Oklahoma Book Award in poetry.

Starks’ own book of original poems, “Family Album,” was published by Running Board Press in 1995 and was a finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award that year.

His book is currently in use in some Southeastern English classes and is available for purchase at the campus book store. Proceeds from its sales go to the Howard Starks Scholarship Fund, which regularly gives awards to Humanities students at Southeastern.

Former students and colleagues of Starks will present poems from his book. Readers at one or both sessions will include Southeastern graduates Chuck, Charisse and Ingrid Ladd of Durant; Ron and Jane Wallace, Durant; Valerie Gee, Antlers; and John Caldwell of Whitesboro, Texas.  Several of these individuals have taught in Oklahoma or Texas public schools, and Ron Wallace and Chuck Ladd currently teach English classes at Southeastern.

Also reading Starks’ poems will be Prus, chair of the University’s EHL Department and Dr. Hill and his wife, Marion.

Starks’ poetry chronicles his experiences while growing up and recalls various family members who impacted his life. One of his poems, “August: Osage County,” describes the experience of watching his grandmother die while surrounded by loving family and extended family.

The title of that poem was used by famed playwright Tracy Letts as the title for his critically acclaimed, darkly comic play “August: Osage County.” That work enjoyed a successful run on Broadway, won both the Tony and Pulitzer Prize for the best original play of 2008, and was made into the 2013 movie starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.

Starks was a close friend of Tracy’s parents, Dr. Dennis and Billie Letts (who both taught at Southeastern, then gained fame as an actor and bestselling novelist, respectively). He watched the Letts’ two sons, Tracy and Shawn, grow up in  Durant and was a hero of the future playwright.
