Dr. Jeremy Blackwood named Dean of the Graduate School

DURANT, Okla. – For the past decade, Dr. Jeremy Blackwood has become well-known at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and in the community for his accomplishments in the field of music.

Most recently, he has served as chair of the department of music, as well vocal coordinator, while teaching applied voice as an associate professor. In addition, he has served as  music director for Opera Southeastern and for productions in collaboration with Theatre at Southeastern each year. Furthermore, Blackwood serves as resident music director for the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival.On top of all of that, Blackwood is an active recitalist and performer.

But he will now be taking on a new role at Southeastern as dean of the graduate school.

As dean, Blackwood will work closely with vice president for academic affairs Dr. Teresa Golden, vice president for enrollment management Dr. Tim Boatmun, and the academic departments  in providing leadership and oversight to develop and sustain graduate programming. He will also retain some teaching duties.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Blackwood as our new graduate dean,’’ Golden said. “He has been an excellent department chair, and is known for caring about students, as well as the entire campus community. His professionalism and positive attitude will be a real asset in serving our increasing number of graduate programs and students.’’

Blackwood earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (vocal performance with a related field in vocal pedagogy) and Master of Music (vocal performance with a related field in Opera Theatre) from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Arkansas State University.

“I am honored to have been considered and to ultimately accept this new role as dean,’’ Blackwood said. “My colleagues and the students at Southeastern have been part of the fabric of my life and helped shaped my leadership for more than a decade. I am so grateful to have an opportunity to continue my advocacy for them on an administrative level.’’

Blackwood, a native of Harrisburg, Arkansas,  joined the Southeastern faculty in 2010, and has served as chair of the music department since 2018.
