Chemistry Degree Tracks

The Department of Chemistry, Computer, and Physical Sciences prepares students to take advantage of the opportunities of the 21st century by providing outstanding training in the dynamic field of Chemistry, and excellent opportunities abound for individuals desiring success.

Everything in the environment, whether naturally occurring, of human design, or even extraterrestrial is composed of chemicals. Chemical research has led to the discovery and development of new and improved synthetic fibers used in our clothing, paints used to color countless items in our world, drugs used to vastly improve human health, alloys and composite materials used to make stronger and more durable structures, and thousands of other products in our lives. The Chemistry program prepares students for careers in industry and research, and for advanced degrees in chemistry and professional programs. At SE students have the opportunity to use highly sophisticated equipment in both teaching and research laboratories. Many students have the opportunity to actively participate in research with faculty members and present their research at professional conferences.

Chemistry-Professional Chemist Open Close

Chemistry students typically have some interest in science and math, and many have a profound interest in discovery and understanding the nature of our environment. If you are creative, curious, motivated and like to solve problems – a chemistry major may be for you. Chemistry is currently in an exciting stage of coordinating with many other disciplines to address and find solutions to the critical problems that face our society. Chemists are involved every day in research dealing with agriculture, biology, electronics, energy-fuels, engineering, medicine, materials science, and many other areas. Students need to develop or possess analytical skills, observational skills, critical thinking skills, and curiosity.

Program Outcomes

Professional Chemist graduates will be prepared for career opportunities in business, industry, and government, not just in the U.S. but around the globe. Graduates have the pre-professional training required for entrance into schools of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, nursing, physical therapy, engineering, pharmacy, and allied public health fields.
