Funding for Study Abroad

Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarships

Currently-enrolled undergraduate students who receive Pell grants as part of their financial aid package are also eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship Program, which provides up to $5000 to pay for study abroad (including Study Abroad Adventures). Additional awards are available through the Gilman-McCain Scholarships for students who are dependents of active-duty members of the military. You can learn more about this scholarship here. The application portal opens on several occasions in cycles, usually in October and February, to fund programs in the following semester.

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad provides competitive scholarships to students with demonstrated financial need. They are especially interested in making life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs. Only undergraduate students are eligible, and they must be enrolled in a program that grants academic credit at their home. The application portal opens in both the Fall and Spring Semester for the following term.

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship

The Freeman-ASIA program provides scholarship support to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need, studying or planning to study in Asian countries, for at least a summer term (of 8 weeks or more) or a semester. Students must apply for these programs so that they will not be in their last year of college. The following countries are currently eligible locations for scholarship support: Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

International Education Financial Aid

A scholarship database and searching tool, designed specifically to promote international educational exchanges. Using this tool provides links to a variety of outside sources of funding and will require a variety of application types. Students are encouraged to consult the scholarships’ details carefully before applying, and are welcome to contact the Office of Study Abroad for more detail.
