Savage Storm Leaders

Savage Storm Leaders (SSLs) are a group of outstanding students who volunteer their time to prepare and welcome new students to the Southeastern campus. SSLs are role models who play a vital role in the transition of new students from their high school environment to the college environment.​

SSLs serve the University for one year from Spring – Fall semesters. Applications are available and accepted in late fall semester for the following spring semester start. SSLs are expected to:​

  • Exhibit commitment to the mission and goals of Southeastern, The Big BLUE Experience, and new student orientation​
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn about SE, its people, and its programs, and to share the information with others​
  • Maintain a good working relationship with the SSL team, University faculty, staff, and students​
  • Promote positive aspects of all University services​
  • Be a friend to someone who needs it​
  • Possess the following role model qualities: maturity responsibility, initiative, motivation, flexibility, enthusiasm, positivity, integrity, and a good work ethic​
  • Be eager to improve leadership and teamwork skills​
  • Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of team members and to promote the benefits of diversity​
  • Work new student orientation, The Big BLUE Experience, and special events​

Applications will be available the first week in October in the Office of Student Life (SU 305). Applications will be due in late October.

Do you love Southeastern Oklahoma State University and want to help welcome new students to campus? Do you want to be part of a dynamic team that represents Southeastern with pride? Then you are who I am looking for!

Savage Storm Leaders (SSLs) are a group of outstanding students who volunteer their time to prepare and welcome new students to the Southeastern campus. SSLs are role models who play a vital role in the transition of new students from their high school environment to the college environment.

SSLs will serve the University from January  – December. All SSLs are expected to:

  1. Attend all scheduled training meetings and events.
  2. Attend the SSL retreat.
  3. Work at the Big Blue Experience and New Student Orientation: Camp SE.
  4. Help prepare for the Big Blue Experience and New Student Orientation: Camp SE.
  5. Exhibit commitment to the mission and goals of Orientation.
  6. Demonstrate a desire to learn about SE, its people, and its programs, and to share the information with others.
  7. Maintain a good working relationship with the SSL team, University faculty, staff, and students.
  8. Work at SE special events, such as Homecoming, Curriculum Contest, Parents’ Day, SE Live, Welcome Week, etc.
  9. Promote positive aspects of all University services.
  10. Be a friend to someone who needs you.
  11. Possess the following role model qualities: maturity, responsibility, initiative, motivation, flexibility, enthusiasm, positivity, integrity, and a good work ethic.
  12. Be eager to improve leadership and teamwork skills.
  13. Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of team members and to promote the benefits of diversity.
  14. Positive attitude, high energy level, knowledge of and enthusiasm for Southeastern

Eligible Applicants

  1. Enrolled full time Fall & Spring
  2. Maintain a 2.25 cumulative GPA

Mission Statement

New Student Orientation assists students with their transition to campus by providing programs and services that outline the University’s academic requirements as well as co-curricular developmental opportunities. We provide new students and their families with an understanding of University expectations and requirements. We believe participation in orientation is a pivotal step in connecting students to their campus community and the opportunity for academic success.

Goals

  1. Meet and know the names of at least five new people
  2. To set realistic expectations for academic achievement
  3. To identify at least five student services and resources and how to access them
  4. To learn about Southeastern traditions and how I am part of those traditions
  5. To experience life as a college student
