Understanding VA Enrollment Requirements

Full-time Status

The VA determines your full-time enrollment status based on your student level (undergraduate or graduate), the number of credit hours you’re taking, and the start and end dates of your classes. If you plan to enroll as a full-time student, be sure to let your advisor know that you’re using VA benefits. This helps ensure your schedule meets the requirements for full-time status and avoids any changes to the amount of your payments.

To be classified as a full-time student you must be enrolled in and maintain

6 credit hours in each short-term block (7 or 8 weeks)

Dropping, Adding, and Withdrawing from Classes

Schedule changes can affect your VA benefits, including your monthly payments. Before making any adjustments, please contact our office at (veterans@se.edu) to understand how these changes might impact you financially.

Classes not required for Graduation

Only classes that count toward your declared major can be certified to VA. We encourage you to contact our office (veterans@se.edu) before enrolling in a class that is not part of your major. This ensures your monthly payments are accurate..

Repeated Classes

VA will only pay for repeated classes if:

  • You failed the course with an “F” grade.
  • You didn’t earn the minimum grade required for your degree program (e.g., a “C” when a “B” is required).
  • You withdrew from the course and didn’t receive credit.
