Student Support Services and Project Teach both had their grants recently renewed.
DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University has recently received confirmation that TRIO grants have been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for Student Support Services and Project Teach.
Both programs assist in retaining and graduating students by providing specific intentional strategies for student success.
“These programs are just two examples of several initiatives we have in place across campus to provide support to our first-generation students,’’ said Southeastern president Thomas Newsom. “Each year, about half of our graduates are first-generation college students, so it is important that we continue to direct resources to serve their needs.’’
Student Support Services (SSS) was awarded $410,844 for the first of five years for a total of $2,054,220. This program serves 300 students, and has been in place at Southeastern since 1977. Services provided include academic counseling/advisement, enrollment, tutoring, assistance with financial aid applications and forms, career guidance, graduate school planning study skills training, cultural awareness activities, and basic computer skills/computer lab use. David Harbin is the Project Director and grant writer of the five full-time staff office.
The Project Teach – Student Support Services grant was $261,888 for the first of five years (a total of $1,309,440). This teacher preparation program just completed its 10th year at Southeastern and serves 140 students.
Services provided include tutoring, assistance with financial aid/FAFSA, academic advisement, career planning, cultural enrichment activities, and graduate school advisement. Also offered is Teacher Certification exam preparation, training in interactive whiteboards and classroom technologies, Education Program application assistance, and Professional Development opportunities.
Darla Ellett is the Project Director and grant writer for the three-person full-time staff.
Both programs are part of the Division for Student Affairs.
