Sixty Southeastern Oklahoma State University students actively participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 19.
The students visited Durant elementary schools at Northwest Heights, Robert E. Lee, and Washington Irving, along with the Intermediate school.
The program consisted of reading stories about MLK Jr. to the students and leading discussions of his life.
This was the 10th year for the Day of Service at Southeastern. The first two years were programs and the last eight years added the Days of Service. The program has gone into the Durant Independent School District the past five years.
Southeastern's Student Life and Multicultural Student offices sponsor the program under the direction of Dean of Students Camille Phelps, who started at Southeastern in 1998 as the Multicultural Coordinator.
Instead of a day off, Southeastern students, faculty and staff celebrate the Day of Service as a "day in" as they volunteer to work with area youngsters while living up to the slogan "Dare to dream: Create Your Community through Service."
More than 1,000 students, faculty and staff have volunteered in the 10 years of the program at Southeastern.
