Outstanding Southeastern Faculty & Staff

Dr. Jeremy Blackwood

Dr. Jeremy Blackwood, Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera Theatre at Southeastern, grew up in Harrisburg, Ark., and graduated from Harrisburg High School.
Blackwood earned the bachelor of music education degree from Arkansas State University, the master of music in voice performance with a related field in opera theatre from the University of North Texas (UNT), and the doctor of musical arts in voice performance with a related field in vocal pedagogy from UNT.
When he began performing in opera theatre productions at Arkansas State University, Blackwood made the decision to go into higher education instruction. He achieved that goal when he became a teaching fellow at UNT.
Blackwood jumped at the opportunity to begin working at Southeastern in the fall of 2006 as an adjunct. The possibility of students working directly with major professors was an appealing part of the job to him.
Currently, he is the coordinator of voice study at Southeastern. He teaches applied voice to vocal music majors, teaches vocal-related coursework, produces the opera theatre production each year, collaborates with Theatre at Southeastern on their joint-production each spring semester and recruits students for the SE Department of Music.
When asked what makes his job so special, Blackwood acknowledged the rewarding feeling of watching students achieve their goals.
“The study of music is quite difficult and I am always amazed and thrilled to see students achieve their goals,” he says, “I am overjoyed when I see a student from a rural area excel in the field of music.”
Blackwood notes opportunity as a prime factor of SE.
“Students who attend large institutions and are in the arts programs will often find themselves not having many opportunities because of the number of people competing for limited spots, or graduate students who fulfill many roles,” Blackwood says, “Southeastern is like a “private university” at the public university price.”
Outside of his busy schedule at Southeastern, Dr. Blackwood enjoys traveling.
