Southeastern commencement set for Dec. 12

State Representative John Carey
DURANT, Okla. – State Representative John Carey will be the speaker at Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Fall Commencement.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, in the new Bloomer Sullivan Arena. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and will be followed immediately by a reception for the graduates and their friends and families in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.
"We are honored that Representative Carey has accepted our invitation to be the speaker at the December commencement," said Southeastern interim president Larry Minks. "He has proven to be a staunch supporter of higher education and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He is an outstanding role model for our students, and we take great pride in the fact that he is a Southeastern graduate."
Representing District 21, Carey earned a bachelor's degree in banking/finance at Southeastern in 1992. His committee assignments include Appropriation and Budget, Economic Development, and Veterans and Military Affairs (Vice Chair).
The Durant native has been active in civic affairs, serving as a Gear-Up mentor, a Crisis Control board member, a board member of the Oklahoma State University Consumer & Family Services Advisory Committee, past chairman of the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show, and as a member of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Homecoming Committee.
Carey and his wife Pam, have three children, Guy Walter (G.W.), Anna Scott, and Emma Claire.
