2020-2021 Cheer Tryouts

Due to the COVID-19 Virus, we are adjusting our 2020-2021 Cheer Tryout Selection Process. We will be moving to a video tryout/recruitment hybrid model. Please read below for updated tryout details.

  • All participants must complete Cheer Tryout Application.
  • All participants must review the Program’s Expectations.
  • All incoming freshmen/transfer students must be admitted to the University.
  • Upon completion of Cheer Tryout Application, you will receive an email with a link to the Game Day videos you will need to learn.

Personal Interview Open Close

Requirements

  • Must be newly filmed; little to no distractions in video.
  • Make sure we can hear and see you through this portion of the video.
  • Collegiate image and responses will be evaluated.
  • Full-body view then zoom into waist-up with clear face visible while speaking.
  • Attire: black workout/cheer practice attire
    • Males: black shirt, black athletic shorts; facial hair trimmed/shaved, hair combed, no jewelry.
    • Females: fitted black athletic top or sports bra, black spandex shorts; hair curled 1/2 up, no jewelry.

Must submit a photo headshot (in correct tryout attire), along with Personal Interview video.

Please speak about each of the following bullets in your video:

  1. Introduction of Candidate:
    1. Name, age, hometown
  2. Cheer Background:
    1. Experience, school/all-star gym name, number of years involved in cheer.
    2. Indicate level of squad/team (JV, Varsity, All-star team level, etc.)
  3. Questions to Answer:
    1. Why do you want to be a member of the Southeastern Cheer Program?
    2. If selected, what characteristics, traits, cheer strengths, etc. do you feel you would bring to the squad?
    3. Which one-word would your most recent coach describe you as that best fits your personality/work ethic/cheerleader abilities?
    4. Any additional details you wish to share.
      1. Things to consider including: major injuries, major issues within a current/previous team, any hardships that might need to be known, etc.
Game Day Open Close
  • Must be newly filmed; little to no distractions in video.
  • Make sure we can hear and see you through this portion of the video.
  • Attire: black workout/cheer practice attire
    • Males: black shirt, black athletic shorts; facial hair trimmed/shaved, hair combed, no jewelry.
    • Females: fitted black athletic top or sports bra, black spandex shorts; hair curled 1/2 up, no jewelry.
  • In correct tryout attire, perform the following game day material as taught via video we send once your tryout application is complete. 
  • Front view (you facing camera)
  • Collegiate image, endurance, motion technique, memory, and general game day appearance/energy will be evaluated.
    1. Southeastern Fight Song to music (one take, videos can’t be spliced together)

    2. Sideline Chant 1 (one intro/lead-in, motions FOUR times, clean/spirit after each; all chants in one video – please do not separate each chant into separate videos)
    3. Sideline Chant 2 (one intro/lead-in, motions THREE times, clean/spirit after each; all chants in one video – please do not separate each chant into separate videos)
Cheer Skills Open Close

Skills can be from performances, competitions, practices, or newly filmed.

Please identify where you are in video clip.

Skills to include:

Jumps Section:

  • Toe Touch
  • Series of 3 Jumps whipped (connected with no claps between) – these can be your choice of jumps.

Standing Tumbling Section:

  • One Standing Tumbling Pass will be scored.

Examples:

    • Standing Back handspring, on dead-mat, grass, or rubberized track
    • Standing Back Tuck 
    • Standing BHS series
    • Toe Touch BHS
    • Jumps to elite tumbling

Execution and difficulty level will be evaluated.

Running Tumbling Section:

  • One Running Tumbling Pass will be scored.
    • At your best tumbling level
    • Showcase variety of skills

Execution and difficulty level will be evaluated.

Stunt Section:

  • Straight Up Lib
  • Stunt of your choice

To continue to comply with the self distancing guidelines, we do not expect you to get a stunt group together to record a new video. Please submit the most recent videos you have of you doing the requested skills. If you do not have the requested skills on video please submit any stunt video that will give the judges a better idea of your skill level.

Video Tryout Reminders Open Close
  • Wear the correct attire if filming new video clips.
  • If submitting video from practices, competitions, or games please provide documentation of which person you are and what skill you execute. Make sure you can visibly be seen throughout section you want evaluated.
  • Do your hair and make-up as if you were trying out in-person.
  • Please do not edit/cut skills per line item. You may stop filming after each tumbling pass/stunt.
    (You can have as many attempts, just only show us one continuous filming per skill requirement listed above.)
  • Make sure the angles and lighting show us the best view of you, your performance, and the execution of skills.
  • All Videos must be received by Friday, April 17 at 5:00 PM CST. 
  • Submit via email (memberson@se.edu) private YouTube link or Dropbox file. Please do not send in video as attachment.
