The Southeastern Aviation Sciences Institute held a Safety Stand Down last Tuesday at Durant Regional Airport.
This is an event used in aviation and other safety-critical industries to pause operations for a single day to hold safety-focused seminars and specialized training for all members of the organization.
The Southeastern event began with fire extinguisher training allowing staff and other participants to use different types of fire extinguishers on a controlled fire using a propane fire trainer device. The day culminated with a special presentation from Capt. Steve Jangelis of Delta Airlines, who presented airline safety topics ranging from accident investigation protocols to the Airline Pilots Association’s role in working with the Federal Aviation Administration on regulatory and safety related procedures, checklists, and self-reporting programs the FAA uses to promote safety culture at airlines.
The event was attended by more than 150 students, mechanics, line service technicians, and flight instructors. Southeastern plans on holding safety stand downs every 4-6 months to ensure all personnel are focused on risk-mitigated training operations.
