Southeastern offering new ‘micro-credential’ opportunities

March 31, 2023

In an effort to meet the demands of today’s workforce, Southeastern Oklahoma State University has recently launched a new program that offers micro-credential opportunities.

Micro-credentials are short courses that allow for learners to upskill and re-skill in areas for possible advancement and placement within their respective career paths. The courses are offered through Southeastern’s Career Management Center.

Micro-credentials are alternative learning pathways directly aligned with Oklahoma’s most critical occupations, including health careers, IT, cybersecurity, advanced technology, teacher education and agriculture. In partnership with businesses and public colleges and universities, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education have identified more than 70 programs and occupations where there is a vital need for micro-credentialing.

At Southeastern, courses are divided into two categories: Professional and Continuing Education, and Career Training,

Once the courses are completed, a digital badge will be issued to participants.

“Micro-credentials allow individuals to gain specific skills and competencies in a shorter timeframe than a degree, while meeting student and employer needs,’’ said Stephanie Davison, director of the Career Management Center. “Our overall goal in offering these personalized and flexible learning pathways is to help create a strong and educated workforce.’’
