June 11, 2026

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University has named Janeva Maxson as director of the Aerospace Sciences Institute. Maxson brings nearly 30 years of leadership experience in aviation, logistics, and strategic management, including senior civilian leader roles with the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense.

Since July 2025, she has served as chair of the Department of Aviation Management, where she oversaw all Aviation Management academic programs within the Institute, including curriculum development, program implementation and continuous improvement of academic standards.

“Janeva Maxson is an exceptional leader whose distinguished career in aviation, national defense, and strategic management reflects the highest standards of excellence and service,” said Rhonda Richards, dean of the John Massey School of Business. “As a two-time Southeastern graduate, she brings not only extensive industry experience but also a deep commitment to our students and the future of the Aerospace Sciences Institute. We are excited to see her build upon the strong foundation established by Mike Gaffney and continue advancing the Institute’s reputation as a leader in aviation and aerospace education.”

A two-time graduate of Southeastern, Maxson earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in 1996 and a Master of Science in Aerospace Administration in 2004. She also holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Her distinguished career has been recognized with multiple Exemplary Civilian Service Awards and Meritorious Civilian Service Awards for leadership and service.

Prior to returning to her alma mater, Maxson spent 29 years serving in senior civilian leader roles with the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense. Most recently, she served as director of Detachment 5 for the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, where she provided executive oversight for installation and mission support operations across the Air Force District of Washington and the National Capital Region.

“I am honored to be chosen as the new Director of the Aerospace Sciences Institute,” said Maxson. “It is humbling to lead an organization with more than 60 years of excellence. I look forward to leading this team of consummate professionals—innovating boldly, teaching with purpose, and preparing the next generation of aerospace leaders.”

Maxson succeeds Mike Gaffney, who retired after serving as director of the institute since 2021.
