Distinguished Alumni: Chuck Dale shaped the future of technical education

DURANT, Okla. – Decades before dual credit programs and workforce partnerships became common in higher education, Charles W. “Chuck” Dale was building connections between classrooms, employers and emerging industries.  

A 1966 graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Dale built a distinguished career in electronics education, curriculum development and higher education. He ultimately served as a professor emeritus at Eastfield College in the Dallas County Community College District. 

Dale earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial education from Southeastern before earning a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University and a doctorate in community college curriculum development and administration from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University-Commerce. 

Dale credits his Southeastern degree with helping open the door to graduate school, his first college position at El Centro College in Dallas and numerous consulting opportunities throughout his career. 

His time at Southeastern also helped shape him personally and professionally. Dale spent three years as a pledge trainer for Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and served as vice president of the fraternity’s Mu Chapter. He has said the fraternity gave him a family away from home, helped him avoid homesickness and taught him valuable leadership skills. 

Throughout his career, Dale served as a consultant and curriculum specialist for numerous organizations, including Texas Instruments, Western Electric, Dallas County Community College District, Pima County Community College, Burr-Brown Research Laboratories and the Texas Education Agency. 

At Eastfield College, he designed and selected equipment for electronics laboratories and developed digital electronics, telecommunications and mechatronics curricula.

Several initiatives Dale developed anticipated practices that later became widely adopted throughout higher education. 

Among Dale’s most influential contributions was a program that allowed high school students to earn both secondary and college credit while attending college courses, an early model of today’s dual-credit programs. 

He developed customized college courses for industry, providing college credit to employees of organizations including AT&T, Texas Instruments and the Dallas Water Department. 

Beyond college coursework, Dale developed specialized technical training programs. He created the curriculum for printed circuit board design for Texas Instruments and authored instructional materials including Basic Electricity and D-C Circuits and a laboratory manual on applied electricity and D-C circuits. 

His expertise led to consulting and curriculum-development projects across the country. Dale contracted with Burr-Brown Research Laboratories in Tucson, Arizona, to develop an electronics program and laboratory. He later taught the program’s first courses. He also consulted with Maui Community College in Hawaii to improve its electronics curriculum through a project funded by the National Science Foundation. 

Dale’s work with industry included a proposal to train AT&T employees on ferrite resin core uninterruptible power supplies that was selected over a proposal from Bell Laboratories. 

Beyond curriculum development and technical training, Dale contributed to initiatives designed to expand educational opportunities for students with disabilities. His work included support for hearing-impaired students through partnerships involving Texas Instruments and Gallaudet University, as well as accredited certification programs in home entertainment systems and renewable energy training initiatives. 

Dale has remained active in service to Southeastern. His involvement has included service on the Southeastern Alumni Board, the Sigma Tau Gamma Mu Chapter Alumni Board of Directors and participation as a Presidential Partner. 

His connection to Southeastern has also extended to supporting future students. The Chuck Dale Scholarship, an endowed scholarship, was established to benefit out-of-state students who pledge Sigma Tau Gamma at Southeastern. 

His civic contributions have included humanitarian efforts such as donating hay to the Endangered Ark Foundation to support rescued circus elephants. 

Dale also served on a Texas governor’s committee examining the use of part-time instructors at two-year and four-year colleges. 

From developing technical curricula and laboratory programs to creating new pathways for high school students and strengthening connections between colleges and industry, Dale’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to innovation in education. 

His journey began at Southeastern, where his studies in industrial education helped launch a career spanning higher education, technology, curriculum development and workforce training. 

Now retired, Dale lives with his wife, Beverly. They have two grown children, Holly and Rusty. He enjoys breeding, raising and showing Hereford cattle, as well as fishing, hunting and woodworking. 

From technical curriculum development and workforce training to early dual-credit opportunities, Dale’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to expanding educational opportunities and connecting higher education with the needs of students and industry.
